Preliminary works on the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading project (KFCRUP), has commenced.
According to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), the project contractor, Shimizu-Konoike JV started work early this month with preparatory works for diversion of both motorised and passenger traffics along Entebbe Road which will have to be reviewed by traffic police before it is rolled out.
UNRA’s media relations officer Allan Ssempebwa said the preparatory works also include relocation of utility lines from the area.
โ€œAll these are part of the physical construction works,โ€ Mr Ssempebwa said. โ€œAfter the ground breaking, normally a contractor is given three months to mobilise equipment which leads us to this time.โ€
Mr Ssempebwa also revealed that they have since signed on board a supervisory consultant for the project.
The Government ofย  Uganda andย  theย  Japaneseย  government through its overseas development agency, JICA, areย  funding the KFCRUP project to a tune of UGX.224b($60M). The project is expected to be completed within 36 months.
According to the project design, the Clock Tower flyover will be half a kilometre long. The road from Shoprite Supermarket at Queenโ€™s Way towards Katwe road will be widened to have more lanes and the redesign will cover half a kilometre.
The contractors will also improve Nsambya Road, Mukwano Road and part of Ggaba Road.
This should greatly ease the flow of traffic in and out of the city ,especially from Entebbe International Airport.
Last June theย  51 Km Entebbe Express Way funded by a loan from EXIM Bank of China was commissioned with toll road points pending equipment and an enabling law in Parliament before fees are charged.
Works are pending commencement on Kampala/Jinja Express Way ;the busiest route connecting land locked Rwanda,Burundi and Eastern DRC to the East African Sea Port of Mombasa,Kenya.
