Authorities warn citizens to stay away from the coast, and if in a building, DO NOT rush outside or stand in a doorway, and never use elevators! Offshore earthquakes of this size trigger an alert for economic losses. Some damage is possible, and the impact should be relatively localized. Estimated economic losses are less than 1% of the United States’s GDP. Past events with this alert level have required a local or regional response.
In San Francisco, there is a major system-wide delay in all directions. Due to an earthquake report, there is currently no Transbay Tube service to or from San Francisco. Due to the earthquake, transit passengers should seek alternate means of transportation.
