Three private island resorts top the list of the world’s most expensive hotels, according to a recent survey conducted by TravelMag.com. The survey compared the rates of luxury hotels around the globe for the main summer travel months of July and August 2014.

With a nightly cost of $6,995 for a double room, the North Island Lodge, which is located within the Seychelles, is the world’s most expensive hotel. Runners-up honors go to Fregate Island resort, also part of the Seychelles, and Laucala Island, located on the island of Fiji. With average rates of $5,246 and $5,040 respectively per night for two people, these resorts landed in the number two and three positions on the survey.

The Top 10 list is rounded out by four luxury safari lodges in Botswana and Tanzania, a luxury tent camp situated on Canada’s Vancouver Island, another private island resort in Tanzania and a luxury resort in Italy’s Sardinia.

Following are the 10 most expensive hotels in the world. The rates listed reflect the average price a couple can expect to spend to stay overnight at each respective resort during the main summer period spanning July 1 through August 31, 2014.

To stay at the North Island Lodge, which is located a 15-minute helicopter ride from the Seychelles’ main Mahe Island, a couple will have to spend a jaw-dropping $5843 per night. That price tag makes the lodge significantly more expensive than the runner up, the Laucala Resort. Located on the small Laucala Island in Fiji, an overnight stay goes for $5040.

Another five African lodges, four of them safari camps, are found inside the Top 10. Europe’s most expensive hotel is the Cala di Volpe, located in Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda. There a double room averages $2939 during August, thus ranking as the ninth most expensive luxury hotel in the world.
