Skal Nepal Honors 1st Above-Knee Double Amputee to Summit Mount Everest

Skal International Nepal, in collaboration with Tourism Toastmasters club, proudly hosted a special event to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Mr. Hari Budha Magar.

On May 19, 2023, Mr. Budha Magar accomplished a remarkable feat by becoming the first above-knee double amputee to successfully climb Mount Everest, defying all odds and inspiring countless individuals globally.

The event, held at Le Himalaya in Kathmandu on May 30, brought together Skal members, Toastmasters, and members from the tourism industry. The gathering aimed to recognize and celebrate the incredible journey of Hari Budha Magar, a British Gurkha veteran, who turned tragedy into triumph and served as a beacon of inspiration for humankind.

The program began with a welcome speech by Mr. Sanjib Pathak, General Secretary of Skal International Nepal, expressing deep gratitude and admiration for Mr. Budha Magar’s indomitable spirit and historic achievements.

Following the opening address and an engaging impromptu Table Topics session, attendees eagerly awaited the highly anticipated highlight of the evening: the SKAL Talk. Hosted by Pankaj Pradhananga, the Charter President of the Tourism Toastmasters club and Executive Committee member of Skal International Nepal, the SKAL Talk featured Mr. Hari Budha Magar sharing his incredible journey, from his time in the British Gurkha to the life-altering loss of his legs in the Afghan war in 2010. Mr. Budha Magar emphasized the importance of fostering an inclusive environment that embraces individuals from all walks of life, including those with disabilities. He also recounted the challenges he faced in obtaining permission to climb Everest as a double amputee and expressed gratitude to his sponsors and expedition team.

Mr. Budha Magar reiterated his commitment to advocating for disability rights awareness, promoting global peace, and positioning Nepal as an inclusive tourism destination.

Through this event, Skal International Nepal reinforced its dedication to promoting innovative and responsible tourism practices. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that empower individuals, regardless of their physical abilities, to explore and immerse themselves in the wonders of the Himalayas and Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

Roshan Ghimire, President of Tourism Toastmasters, delivered the vote of thanks and invited participants to join the Toastmasters club,; emphasizing the importance of investing in honing effective communication and presentation skills. The event was skillfully emceed by Esha Thapa, a Toastmaster from the Tourism Toastmasters club, with an impromptu speaking session conducted by Santosh and the Sergeant at Arms role fulfilled by Prarthana, both from the Tourism Toastmasters club.
