Six Lions Poisoned in Queen Elizabeth National Park

The tourism fraternity in Uganda woke up to the tragic news that six lions in were found dead in Queen Elizabeth National Park located west of the country .

  1. For the second time in three years, lions were killed in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda
  2. A blow for tourism in Uganda
  3.  In 2019 Parliament of Uganda passed the Wildlife Act which was meant to strengthen community participation, compensate communities for the loss of their animals and property to wildlife

Management of Uganda Wildlife Authority has put up a reward of UGX10,000,000 (10 million Uganda Shillings (US$2,726) to anybody with information that will lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the people behind the heinous act.

The statement reads:

“Conserving our wildlife resources is a duty for Ugandans and we should all work together in fighting all forms of  wildlife crime. We therefore urge the public to join us in this fight by giving us information in confidence so that the killers of our lions are brought to book. We request whoever has useful information to this effect contact us through telephone number+256776800152. We guarantee the confidentiality of everyone who will give us information.

“Since we discovered dead lions on March 18, 2021, we have collected samples from the carcasses and taken them for laboratory tests to establish the actual cause death. Once the results of the tests are out, we shall inform the public. Other government agencies have also joined us in investigating this matter. We are discounting nothing in this undertaking until we get the perpetrators of this heinous act.

“We reiterate our unwavering commitment to protecting Uganda’s wildlife over the years, our concerted and consistent conservation efforts have seen increase animal numbers in all our protected areas, and this trend continues despite the setbacks we encounter.”

This was later confirmed by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Communications Manager Hangi Bashir who released a presser stating “The carcasses of the lions were found last evening (March 18) at Isasha sector with most of their body parts missing. Eight dead vultures were also found at the scene which points to possible poisoning of the lions by unknown people.
