Seychelles is set to make history as the first African nation to host the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which will take place from 1 to 11 May 2025. This eagerly awaited tournament promises electrifying goals, exceptional skills, and unforgettable experiences, all set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most stunning destinations.
Seychelles, a tiny yet magical island republic in the western Indian Ocean, may be hard to spot on a world map, but it stands out as a dream destination. Known for its lush tropical vegetation, stunning beaches, and diverse marine life, Seychelles is a paradise waiting to be explored.
On Wednesday, 27th November 2024, in the picturesque gardens of the Seychelles State House, the custom-designed match ball, expertly crafted by Adidas, was unveiled. The launch was officiated by the President of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, alongside Mr. Elvis Chetty, President of the Seychelles Football Federation, as well as FIFA representatives, the Minister for Youth, Sports, and Family, Mrs. Marie-Céline Zialor, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde.
The event, held ahead of the weekly Cabinet briefing, also saw the participation of the Local Organising Committee, including its CEO, Mr. Ian Riley, and other Cabinet members.
Speaking at the event, President Ramkalawan affirmed that the Seychelles Government is set to give its full support to the organization of this prestigious international event to ensure a successful FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
“We are pleased that we can organize tournaments at a world level, and we are excited to welcome the teams that have already qualified.” He also shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming matches, including the chance to see the Seychelles team compete, saying, “We are doing our utmost to support the team, and I look forward to seeing beach soccer at another level.”
President Ramkalawan expressed his gratitude for Seychelles’ selection as the host nation, emphasizing the significance of hosting such a global event despite the country’s small size.
Mr. Chetty echoed this sentiment, expressing his pride in Seychelles’ historic role as the first African nation to host the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. He highlighted how this milestone reflects both the rising popularity of beach soccer in Africa and Seychelles’ potential as a top-tier destination for international sporting events.
“This event not only underscores the growing popularity of beach soccer across the continent but also highlights Seychelles as a lively and idyllic venue for international sporting occasions,” he said.
The Adidas-designed ball features a cutting-edge, vibrant design that reflects the dynamic heritage of beach soccer while capturing the energy and beauty of Seychelles. The ball, crafted to FIFA standards, is lighter than a traditional football and will be used in all 32 matches across the nine-match days.
The tournament will see 16 national teams compete in Paradise. Eight teams, including Tahiti, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belarus, Senegal, and Mauritania, have already secured their spots. The remaining slots will be determined through upcoming qualifiers in The Bahamas, Chile, and Thailand.
Speaking after the event, Minister Sylvestre Radegonde highlighted how the World Cup would bring Seychelles closer to the world.
“Seychelles is a versatile destination, and we are thrilled to share our little corner of paradise with beach soccer fans from across the globe. We invite visitors not only to witness the tournament but also to experience our rich Creole culture, tantalizing cuisine, and traditional arts. From dancing the Moutya to crafting a kapatya, we hope they leave with unforgettable memories while leaving a positive footprint,” said Minister Radegonde.
For beach soccer fans eager to own a piece of this historic event, the Official Match Ball will be available closer to the tournament at official fan experience outlets and select retail stores.
