Professor Alastair Morrison Passed Unexpectedly During a Medical Procedure

Professor Alastair M. Morrison, Ph. D., passed away last week during a medical procedure. Alastair was a giant and a pioneer in tourism marketing whose work profoundly shaped the field.

His close friend Professor Dimitrios Buhali wrote: “It was an immense privilege to collaborate with him for 30 years, sharing ideas, research, and a passion for advancing tourism knowledge. I was surprised and heartbroken to learn from Professor Tiger Wu that Alastair passed away due to ineffective medical treatment.”

Beyond his remarkable academic contributions, Alastair was a Fellow Member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, the Founding Editor of the International Journal of Tourism Cities, and a Professor Emeritus at Purdue University. He was a true global leader in the travel and tourism field.

Professor Morrison was a distinguished professor emeritus specializing in tourism and hospitality marketing at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, and the CEO of Belle Tourism International Consulting (BTI) in Shanghai, China.

He was the past President of the International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA). Prof. Morrison is a Visiting Professor at the University of Greenwich in London and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Tourism Cities (IJTC).

In addition to having lived and worked in five different countries, Professor Morrison has had a wide variety of experience in the global tourism industry. Most recently he has conducted training programs and provided marketing and development advice in Australia, Bahrain, China, Ghana, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Jamaica, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, and Vietnam.

Professor Morrison was the author of five leading books on tourism marketing and development, Marketing and Managing Tourism Destinations 2nd edition (2019), Global Marketing of China Tourism (2012), Hospitality and Travel Marketing, 4th edition (Cengage Delmar Learning, 2010), The Tourism System, 8th edition, (Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, 2018), and Tourism: Bridges across Continents (McGraw-Hill Australia, 1998).

In an analysis by Ryan (2005), Professor Morrison was among the world’s five most prolific contributors to the academic journals in tourism and hospitality management. He has published more than 200 scholarly articles, conference proceedings, and over 50 research monographs related to marketing and tourism.
