After the 2018 earthquake creating a big challenge to the Indonesian Travel and Tourism Industry on the Island of Lombok, low-cost airline AirAsia has announced it wants to fly directly between Lombok and Perth.

This is excellent news for this Bali sister island.

AirAsia Indonesia announced its intention to develop a hub in Indonesiaโ€™s West Nusa Tenggara province in an effort to bring tourists back to the island and realize the Indonesian governmentโ€™s tourism agenda to develop “10 new Balis.”

Part of that will mean basing two Airbus A320 aircraft in Lombok, double existing flights to Malaysia, as well as starting a Perth service.

AirAsia group chief executive Tony Fernandes said the past year had been a very sad and challenging time for the people of Lombok, including the local tourism industry, which has suffered as a result of the recent earthquakes.

โ€œIn the next few months, we will be working with airports and government authorities to turn Lombok into our newest hub in Indonesia, making this commitment a reality,โ€ he said.

AirAsia Indonesia CEO Dendy Kurniawan said Lombok is a premier holiday destination in the region.

AirAsia started its Kuala Lumpur service to Lombok in October 2012, and currently operates seven return flights per week.
