PATA Chairman Peter Semone on the Role of Peace and Tourism

Chair PATA
Written by Peter Simone

This content was provided by Peter Semone, Chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), in response to a request by the World Tourism Network on the important subject of Peace and Tourism. eTurboNews will cover a broad spectrum of contributions by leaders and travel industry visionaries from around the globe with limited editing. All published contributions will serve as the base for this ongoing discussion we intend to take forward into the New Year.

There is no doubt that tourism has a more meaningful and higher purpose beyond sheer pleasure-seeking and profit making. Tourism should be an important catalyst for intercultural interaction, which fosters mutual understanding and builds bridges across people, faiths, and ethnicities.

But, if people understand one another better as a result of a tourism experience, the world is, in a small way, a better place.

PATA sees tourism as an opportunity to unite people, inspire imaginations of possibilities for a shared future, and break down barriers by showcasing our unique cultures and celebrating our differences.

Geopolitical conflicts and tourism have an oxymoronic relationship, so peace is an existential necessity.
