The governments of Russia and Oman have reached an agreement to eliminate visa requirements for holders of standard passports. The signing ceremony was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Sultan and Prime Minister of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said.
Until now, Russian citizens needed to obtain a complimentary 14-day visa to enter Oman, which could not be extended or converted to a different type.
In 2020, Oman implemented a visa exemption for Russian nationals, allowing them to stay for a maximum of 14 days. In response, Russia has made electronic visas available for Omani citizens.
Direct flights between Russia and Oman commenced in the fall of 2024, with Oman Air providing regular services from Moscow to Muscat.
Under the new agreement, citizens of Russia and Oman will be permitted to enter, transit, and exit without the need for visas.
According to the agreement, each party allows citizens of the other party to reside in its territory visa-free for a duration of 30 days per visit, with the total stay not exceeding 90 days within a calendar year.
The visa-free agreement is not applicable to individuals entering for purposes of permanent residency, education, or employment. Should an individual plan to remain in the country for over 30 consecutive days or 90 days within a year, a visa is required.
From a tourism perspective, Oman presents a promising opportunity for Russian travelers. Unlike its Gulf neighbors, Oman emphasizes traditional Arabic architecture and landscaping, steering clear of the construction of towering skyscrapers and artificial islands. The country has established attractive incentives for beach tourism, and alcoholic beverages are readily accessible in hotels.
Additionally, a double taxation agreement exists between Russia and Oman, facilitating the enhancement of trade relations. By the conclusion of 2023, the trade volume reached $400 million, reflecting a 60% increase compared to the previous year.
New visa-free agreement will take effect 30 days following the final notification confirming the completion of all required domestic procedures.
