CT technology employs sophisticated three-dimensional rotatable imaging, which significantly enhances the capability of screening personnel to identify explosives and other potential threats.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has today revealed its intention to implement computed tomography (CT) technology at security screening checkpoints in various airports throughout Canada over the course of several years. This initiative highlights CATSA’s dedication to fostering innovation and enhancing the customer experience in aviation security across the country.

CT technology employs sophisticated three-dimensional rotatable imaging, which significantly enhances the capability of screening personnel to identify explosives and other potential threats. For air travelers, this advancement allows for the inclusion of permitted liquids, aerosols, and gels (each under 100 mL), medical devices, and larger electronic items to remain in their carry-on luggage during the screening process.

The inaugural complete installation of CATSA’s new CT technology is situated at the newly established ABC security screening checkpoint at Vancouver International Airport. CATSA has collaborated closely with the Airport Authority on this important project.

Further installations of CT equipment are scheduled for other airports, commencing in the fall of 2024 and extending over several years. Effective collaboration with each airport authority is essential for the successful implementation of this national initiative. The realization of this CT innovation is contingent upon their continued support.

In collaboration with its third-party screening contractors and air travel partners, CATSA is dedicated to providing efficient security screening and exceptional service during the nationwide implementation of CT technology and in the future.

“Our emphasis is on deploying cutting-edge solutions that improve the screening process while maintaining the utmost security standards. Although the rollout of this technology will take several years, we are enthusiastic about the beneficial impact it will have on the overall experience of passengers,” stated Nada Semaan, President and Chief Executive Officer of CATSA.

“It’s great to see this innovative use of technology in action. This will make security screening more effective and improve the passenger experience for Canadians and tourists in our airports across Canada,” said the Honorable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport.

“I am excited to introduce our newly renovated domestic checkpoint showcasing advanced security screening equipment – a first in Canada. With this innovative system, you can now move through security effortlessly—no need to remove liquids, aerosols, gels, or large electronics from your carry-on bags—while maintaining the highest security standards. Our $25 million investment has expanded and modernized this space with the traveller in mind and reflects our commitment to blending functionality with a unique sense of place,” said Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
