Major Earthquake in Los Angeles: “Sharp jolts that are the worst” (5.1 strong)

A 5.1 measured earthquake in Thousands Oaks, Venture County,  California shook the Los Angeles region this morning during rush hour traffic.

“Something shook and we all sat there and then said yep think that was an earthquake and went back to work-lol.” A reader posted to X.

The 5.1 quake had a depth of 7.2 miles, 9 km, and was recorded at 7.28 am Pacific Time during rush hour traffic.

It appears no significant reports of damages are surfacing.

It was felt in Los Angeles County, Venture County, and beyond. The epic center was in epicenter was in Thousand Oaks, 5 miles from Malibu, California.

Thousand Oaks, situated in the northwestern portion of Greater Los Angeles, is the second-largest city in Ventura County, California. It is renowned for its abundance of oak trees and is positioned approximately 15 miles away from the city of Los Angeles and 40 miles from Downtown Los Angeles.

The quake was 7.2 miles deep.
Some people report they received warnings minutes before the earthquake struck.

An eyewitness said: “It felt like it was around 5. At least it was rolling. It’s the sharp jolts that are the worst.”
