The Town of Caledon in Ontario, Canada, has designated October as Jamaica Heritage Month. This month-long celebration aims to recognize and honor Jamaican Canadians’ rich cultural contributions to our community’s diverse fabric.

Canada and Jamaica have a long history of diplomatic ties dating back to 1962, and over 300,000 Jamaicans live in the country. The Jamaica Heritage Month initiative collaborates with the Town of Caledon, local Jamaican-Canadian organizations, and community volunteers. It aims to educate, entertain, and foster cross-cultural understanding among all residents.

The mayor of Caledon, Her Excellency Annette Groves said. “We are thrilled to dedicate a full month to celebrating the vibrant Jamaican culture that has enriched our town. This initiative reflects Caledon’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural diversity.”

Director of Tourism Donovan White said, “Canada is Jamaica’s second-highest source market, and this celebration is an opportunity for all Caledon residents to experience the warmth, creativity, and resilience of Jamaican culture. Jamaican Heritage Month is a bridge, allowing Canadians to experience our culture’s warmth, rhythm, and flavor here at home.”

Canada’s Regional Director, Angella Bennett, said, “The launch of Jamaican Heritage Month aligns perfectly with our mission to promote ‘Brand Jamaica’ globally and will assist us in meeting our target of getting 500,000 Canadians to Jamaica. We invite everyone to participate and learn more about our shared history and future.”
