Lima, the capitol city of Peru is known to be a vibrant place to visit. Food is one of the best on our planet, and Pisco Sour, the national drink is one of the most dangerous drinks in the world. Visitors always should be aware of property crime and worse, but with common sense, the city is well worth exploring.

Visiting Peru means exploring an astonishing culture with incredibly warm and welcoming people, amazing landscapes, and unforgettable memories. It can also mean pickpocketing, violent crime, or murder. Like traveling anywhere in South America, a visitor’s common sense will go a long way in terms of safety and security.

The United States Embassy has issued a security alert to its citizens visiting Peru in the wake of the wave of crimes that has swept the country and which, in the last 24 hours alone, has left eight people dead in the capital city, Metropolitan Lima.

“We are aware of recent reports of armed robberies and cell phone theft in areas of Lima where U.S. citizens are known to live and visit,” the Department of State Consular Affairs posted.

In light of the latent insecurity, visitors should always be aware of what is happening around them. This is a must if visiting various areas of the capital, especially Barranco, Miraflores, La Molina, and Surco.

Peru expects to receive 3.5 million foreign tourists this year, below the pre-pandemic figures (4.4 million). According to the latest report from Mincetur, the flow of foreigners entering our country has fallen for the second consecutive month.
