Holistic Medical Tourism: A World Tourism Network Initiative for Indonesia

WTN Chapter Indonesia

The Indonesian Chapter of the World Tourism Network is changing the way the world is looking at Indonesia as a travel and tourism destination.

When WTN had its first global summit TIME 2023 at the Renaissance Uluwatu Bali in September 2023, a free economic zone made for medical tourism had a first discussion.

In the meantime, WTN Chairwoman Mudi Astuti has worked hard on this goal for Bali to become a world-class medical and holistic tourism destination.

The WTN Chapter in Indonesia together with experts in the World Tourism Network member family from countries such as India, Korea, Germany, and Malaysia, launched relevant initiatives under the Indonesian Medical Tourism Association (AWM) umbrella.

The idea of an Integrative Whole Health Clinic & Medical Resort was introduced at the WTN event. Such a clinic is meant to empower individuals to take an active role in their health while providing a holistic and personalized approach to healthcare.

Medical tourism is currently a program relied upon to revive Indonesia’s tourism sector and creative economy. Indonesia is working to develop medical tourism in rural areas as part of the country’s push to sharpen its healthcare offerings and is doing so through the Indonesia Medical Tourism Association (AWMI).

Taufik Jamaan, chairman of AWMI told TTG Asia on the sidelines of the World Tourism Network Summit 2023 in Bali, the association’s work started in late 2022, and ongoing efforts include collaborating with food processing trainers to ensure hygienic food processing.

AWMI is collaborating with pharmaceutical companies on the verification of herbal medicine by the National Agency of Drug and Food Control and to make herbal medicine more easily accessible to visitors.

The WTN chairwoman Mudi Astuti has been maneuvering with medical tourism associations such as AWMI, the Ministry of Tourism, and other international WTN members in shaping the future of the medical tourism industry in Indonesia.

Ms. Astuti is now also the co-chair of the Indonesia Healthcare Tourism Promotion Board.

Indonesia’s Heath Promotion Tourism Board, specializes in medical tourism services, helping businesses reach their target audiences and achieve their business objectives. The expertise of the entity lies in creating effective marketing strategies, building brand visibility, and driving customer engagement.

According to Mudi, the challenge is to get everyone to work together in creating a signature product and service for both the local and the international market.

Indonesia had federal elections and it’s likely a new minister of tourism may take the helm.

World Tourism Network counts on this minister to continue to unite the industry, so the global connection WTN brought to the table can benefit the development of this lucrative segment of the tourism industry forward.

WTN sees the first focus for the development of this market in Jakarta, Bali, and Java.
