The corridor connecting Toronto and Quebec City is recognized as a megaregion, accommodating a population of 18 million individuals and contributing 40 percent to the national GDP. It is also home to over 700,000 students and more than 30 institutions of higher education. This vibrant area necessitates an efficient transportation system to facilitate swift travel between cities.
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the initiative to establish a high-speed rail network within the Toronto-Quebec City corridor.
This rail system will cover approximately 1,000 kilometers and achieve speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, with designated stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City.
Once the service is operational, travel times will be significantly reduced, allowing for a journey from Montréal to Toronto in just three hours. The high-speed rail service will be officially named Alto.
