California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Napa.

Travel and tourism, wine tasting – the Napa Valley is a world-class address for good wine. This morning a lot of these expensive wine bottles may have been destroyed. This is after the 6.2 earthquake measured in after 3:00 am Sunday morning in Napa and the San Francisco, California, area.

Earthquake damage to the Bay area’s transportation network seems to be limited to cracked and buckled pavement that heaved upward as much as two feet in the Napa area, CHP officials said.

Reporters on the ground in Napa and Sonoma counties are reporting the smell of gas is overwhelming.

An earthquake-injured patient was airlifted to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, California; 87 people were injured, 3 critical.

Nappa Valley County was declared a State of Emergency with damaged buildings, gas leaks, and water main breaks occuring.

California Gov. Jerry Brown issued the following statement Sunday morning:

“My Office of Emergency Services has been on full activation since early this morning and is working closely with state and local emergency managers, first responders and transportation officials to respond to impacts to residents and critical infrastructure. These public safety officials are doing all they can to help residents and those living in affected areas should follow their guidance and instruction.”

It was a rolling quake, said Oakland resident Rich Lieberman. “It started very much like a rolling sensation and just got progressively worse in terms of length. Not so much in terms of shaking, but it did shake. It felt like a side-to-side kind of rolling sensation. Nothing violent but extremely lengthy and extremely active.”

According to a report on KCBS News site, Napa City Councilmember Peter Mott said the library and the historic Chinese laundry building suffered significant damage.

In addition, four homes were destroyed and several others damaged when a fire broke out at a mobile home park in Napa. SFgate.com reported that the fire might have been fueled by natural gas and that firefighters were initially unable to deal with it because of broken water mains caused by the earthquake.
