In total, Brazil welcomed 4,897,671 international tourists during the first nine months of 2024.

Brazil is experiencing an increase in international tourism. Between January and September 2024, the nation recorded a 12% rise in foreign visitors compared to the same timeframe in 2023. September marked a historic high for the month since records began in 1989, with 445,389 travelers arriving—an impressive 26.4% increase from September 2023.

In total, Brazil welcomed 4,897,671 international tourists during the first nine months of 2024. This positive information was disclosed on Monday (14) by the Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with Embratur and the Federal Police.

Marcelo Freixo, the president of Embratur, expressed his satisfaction with these figures. “September achieved a record increase of 26.4% compared to the previous year, the highest ever recorded for that month. This success reflects our initiatives to promote a wider array of destinations and experiences beyond the conventional sun-and-beach tourism,” he stated.

“We are highlighting Brazil’s rich offerings—its natural beauty, culture, cuisine, and festivals—providing distinctive experiences throughout the year. This approach mitigates the effects of seasonality, enhancing tourism even during off-peak periods and ensuring consistent business and employment within the sector,” Freixo further noted.

Minister of Tourism Celso Sabino conveyed his enthusiasm regarding the positive trend. “Brazil is strengthening its international image. We have been focusing on showcasing our cultural, culinary, and natural diversity, which is unique to our country. Our objective is to achieve double-digit growth in the number of foreign tourists by 2027,” Sabino remarked.

September ranked as the fourth most successful month for international tourist arrivals in 2024, following the peak season months of January, February, and March.

Argentina continues to be the leading source of tourists for Brazil, contributing over 1.4 million visitors since the beginning of the year. The United States ranks second with more than 518,000 tourists, while Chile holds the third position with 454,225 visitors. European nations, including France, Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, collectively added 741,614 visitors who traveled across the Atlantic to experience Brazil.

The Ministry of Tourism has recently introduced the National Tourism Plan (PNT) for 2024-2027, which aims to establish Brazil as the premier tourist destination in South America. This plan sets an ambitious goal of attracting 8.1 million foreign tourists each year and generating US$8.1 billion in tourism revenue. Given the current trends, Brazil anticipates exceeding 10 million international visitors during this timeframe.
