QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand – A Chinese tourist who vanished from Queenstown more than two weeks ago may have gone on a day hike, police say.

QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand – A Chinese tourist who vanished from Queenstown more than two weeks ago may have gone on a day hike, police say.

Kwei Ying Wong, also known as Joyce, disappeared from the resort town on August 22, just one day before her week-long solo holiday in New Zealand was due to end.

The 63-year-old Hong Kong resident was captured on CCTV footage on Camp Street outside O’Connell’s Mall on Friday afternoon on August 22.

Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron said she was dressed in a knee-length purple puffer-style coat and carrying a day pack, indicating that she may have been planning a bush walk.

“That’s one of the options we’re looking at, but we’re not sure in which direction she was going when she left the CBD,” Det Sgt Cameron told NZ Newswire.

She did not return to her accommodation that night and missed her flight home the next day.

Ms Wong is described as a fit, young-looking 63-year-old with limited spoken English.

Police have been in touch with Ms Wong’s son in Hong Kong and were working with other undisclosed agencies as part of the investigation.

“We’ve got concerns for her wellbeing,” Det Sgt Cameron said.

“We’re still hopeful that we can locate her. However, obviously as time goes on that hope diminishes somewhat.”

Anyone who may recall either speaking to or seeing Ms Wong on or after August 22 should contact Queenstown police.
