The Univeristy of Montana’s Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research estimates that 11 million visitors came to the state in 2013, and some of them came by bike. The Adventure Cycling Association says they’ve seen their numbers rise by hundreds in the last 5 years.

A Missoula TV station is telling you why.

“The numbers just continue to grow and getting about 1200 people in a season that is as short our summers is pretty significant,” said Ginny Sullivan, Adventure Cycling Association.

To see the impact, you could follow the trail…

“I feel like bike touring has gotten more popular just in general in the last number of years, we actually get like a lot of foreign tourists,” said Brandon Salayi, The Trailhead.

At the Trailhead, some bicyclists make a pit stop for supplies.

“Probably the most basic is fuel you know for their stoves, or potentially some sleeping pads or some base layers or a jacket,” said Salayi.

Bicycle tourists generally carry everything with them on the road. And when they have to stock up, the Institute says these tourists are likely to support local businesses.

“They spend about $75 dollars a day they spend 8 1/2 – 9 days in the state those things really add up,” said Sullivan.

And cyclists don’t just stop for goods, but also rest at hotels, and refuel at places like Lolo Peak Brewery.

“I know a lot breweries right now will give discounts off for bikers that come in that show their helmet or a sticker they have or point their bike out, so it’s something we will be doing soon,” said Patrick Offen, Lolo Peak Brewery Co-Owner.

Have you thought about visiting Yellowstone lately?
Well how about getting their on your bike to get there or other long distance places? After all they say the journey is part of the adventure — And a popular trail to get there is the TransAmerica which runs along the Highway 93.
