A massive and deadly landslide in India now also caused the Bihar government in India to issue a flood alert in the northern districts of the state and to start evacuating thousands of people.

HERE ARE THE LATEST UPDATES:

The government has evacuated 20,000 people living along the embankment of the Kosi River as a 10-meter-high wall of water is expected to sweep down the river from Nepal soon, officials said. Over 100,000 people are expected to be evacuated by today evening.

Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth today chaired a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee to review the situation and outline measures being taken by the center.

Six army columns as well as medical teams are being moved to the possible area of impact. The center has asked officials of the Central Water Commission to speak to their counterparts in Nepal to monitor the flow of water.

The flood alert comes in the wake of a massive landslide over Bhote Kosi, one of the major tributaries of the Kosi River in Nepal.

“Bhote Kosi has been blocked due to an enormous landslide last night, damming the river and resulting in massive accumulation of water. The team will immediately inform us when the Nepal Army blasts the debris to free the river,” said Vyasji, Principal Secretary of Bihar Disaster Management Department.

The center has assured Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi of every possible help, said Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Indian Army and the Air Force have been kept on stand-by to assist in relief operations. The state government has set up 84 relief camps.

Eight teams of the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF and 4 teams of the State Disaster Response Force or SDRF have been pressed into service. An additional 7 teams of the NDRF are being mobilized from West Bengal.

The state government has put its personnel on alert and instructed them to evacuate 150,000 people in 3 districts – Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Araria, Purnia, and Madhubani.

“The situation is under control in Nepal, and it will be okay in Bihar, too. Thanks to proper coordination and communication, another big tragedy has been averted,” said an official of the Bihar government.
