Locals feel there’s a potential for a HUGE money maker for Auburn, and it could become an overnight success if the idea were implemented!

The local press addressed citizens in this Alabama town and suggested:

A few Auburnians are aware that since the late ’60s the biggest tourist attraction in San Francisco is a tour of Alcatraz Prison. (Anyone who wants to take the tour must book far in advance because by 1970, waiting-in-lines warranted it!)

Most everyone knows that it was a federal prison from 1933 until 1963 and is referred to as “The Rock.” In 1972 Alcatraz became a national recreation area and today’s facilities are managed by the National Park Service.

And so, Auburnians, here’s what is possible! Since it’s a fact that there are well over 2,000 inmates in maximum facilities around the state that will be released within the next two years that it could be now be considered for transfer into the four prisons scheduled for closure; thus, freeing up “open beds” for the prisoners in Auburn prison so that it could be emptied out.

Auburn’s prison could easily become a bigger attraction for tourism than even Alcatraz! And why? Because we could brag about the first electrocution happening here!

After all, the tunnels that tourists were able to view prisoners back in the mid-1800s already exist inside Auburn’s prison. And despite the continuing rise in admission costs, it continued to draw large crowds!

And here’s a plus! The Cayuga County Arts Council could get a split of the ticket price and continue their efforts to renovate the Auburn Shine’s Theatre.

There’s also another darn good reason for doing it. Auburn’s biggest sore spot could instead become it’s biggest tourist attraction!
