BANGKOK, Thailand – EarthCheck, the specialist organization that sets the benchmarks for environmental awareness and conservation for the international hospitality industry, has awarded 2014 Silver Certification to Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok.

The five-star property, which is directly linked to the Bangkok Convention Centre Hall and the Central Plaza shopping and lifestyle complex, has recently been totally renovated.

“Green and sustainable tourism is one of the defining policies of Centara Hotels & Resorts, and applies across our entire portfolio of properties,” says Andre Brulhart, the hotel’s general manager.

“The entire management team and staff at Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao are proud and delighted that we have achieved EarthCheck Silver Certification, and it reflects the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone.

“We are now working towards our Gold Certification.”

EarthCheck operates an Environmental Management System, a series of practical tools for the benchmarking and certification of operations practices.

The environmental performance of each property is monitored against policy, benchmarking the indicators against baseline and best practices. The environmental and social impact is measured through the EarthCheck Online Self Assessment. All results are assessed and verified by third party auditors on an annual basis.

To achieve Silver Certification a participating hotel is required to have a sustainable policy in place and to implement an environmental action plan for proper monitoring and measurements on 10 key performance areas, namely greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, management of freshwater resources, ecosystem conservation and management, social and cultural management, land use planning and management, air quality protection, wastewater management, solid waste management, and elimination of environmentally harmful substances.

Originally opened in 1983 as the first property of Centara Hotels & Resorts, Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok has 565 rooms and suites, the majority of them offering views across the green expanse of Chatuchak Park.

The hotel has nine restaurants and bars, a Spa Cenvaree, a fitness center, and an outdoor swimming pool set in lush gardens. Stations for the MTR subway and the BTS Skytrain are located adjacent to the hotel, and the elevated expressway ensures that Suvarnabhumi International Airport is only 30 minutes away.

Centara Hotels & Resorts is Thailand’s leading operator of hotels, with 46 deluxe and first-class properties covering all the major tourist destinations in the Kingdom.

A further 21 resorts in Maldives, Vietnam, Shanghai, Bali, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Qatar and Laos brings the present total to 67 properties. Brands and properties within Centara ensure that specific categories such as couples, families, individuals, and meetings and incentives groups will all find a hotel or resort that is appropriate to their needs. Centara operates 27 branches of Spa Cenvaree, one of Thailand’s most luxurious and innovative spa brands, together with its recently-launched value brand Cense by Spa Cenvaree, which provides core spa services for busy travelers. The company’s Kids’ Club is available at all the family-friendly resorts to ensure that the youngsters and teens have their own leisure zone. Centara also operates three state-of-the-art convention centers in Bangkok, and two in northeastern Thailand, one being located in Udon Thani and the other in Khon Kaen. The latest Centara brand is named COSI Hotels, an affordable lifestyle brand designed for travelers who predominantly make their bookings via the Internet and who want comfort and convenience at affordable prices; the brand is under development with the first property due to open in 2016.
