The Dominican Republic Tourism minister Francisco Javier García announced Sunday that Dominican Republic’s South region will start to receive this year German tourists en masse, with projected growth of 40%.

He called the figure very significant as taking into account that the area still lacks the required physical infrastructure.

The official said the growth results from the region’s inclusion in the tourism promotion abroad. “We’re talking about full, Barahona, Pedernales and Lake Enriquillo circuit.”

“For us it was a surprise in this exhibit that a tour operator as important as Thomas Cook was impacted so positively by the country’s south region,” said Garcia, who heads the Dominican delegation in Berlin’s International Tourism Fair (ITB) which ended this weekend.

He said the South has highway infrastructure with very good roads, but work must be done on the part of accommodations.

Bahia de las Aguilas

The Tourism Minister said president Danilo Medina is working on Bahia de las Aguilas’ development. “I’m confident that Pedernales’ coast will be developed during President Medina’s term in office.”

He said there’ll be interested investors once the area’s legal problems are resolved.
