Major Barbados, Martinique earthquake: Tourists should leave beaches now

Residents and visitors in parts of the Caribbean, including Barbados, Martinique were literally shaken out of their sleep this morning, as an earthquake affected the islands.

A major 6.7 earthquake was measured East of the French Island of Martinique and Barbados in the Windward Island region in the Caribbean Ocean at 5.27 am local time on Tuesday.

The exact location: 14.694ยฐN 59.015ยฐW depth=17.5km (10.8mi)

The islands affected are all known and major tourist destinations. Tourists should be made aware of the threat of a local tsunami and may want to prepare for evacuation or get to higher ground. Tourists should be warned to immediately evacuate beaches.

A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami dat. However there is the small possibility of a local or regional tsunami that could affect coasts located usually not more than a few hundred kilometers from the epicenter.

Authorities in the Caribbean should be made aware of this possibility.
