As the result of the second Dominican Republic – Haiti high level talks in the Dominican border town of Jimaní on Monday, the two nations agreed to protect the Hispaniola’s environment.Hispaniola is the region the Dominican Republic and Haiti jointly occupies.

The two Environment ministers agreed on the urgent need to protect the island’s environment and the natural resources, with joint programs and projects to recover binational watersheds and manage cross-border natural resources.

They agreed to deploy people and set aside funds,collaborate with the local communities and international organizations to find solutions to the environmental deterioration.

“The signatories of this memo understand that in order to reduce the island’s environmental degradation and losses in biodiversity, pledge to renew efforts to place people at the center of the problem and work closely to the island’s sustainable economic development,” says the agreement.

In the document Dominican Environment minister Bautista Rojas and Haiti counterpart Jean François Thomas agreed to create a binational program to study and monitor lakes Enriquillo and Azuei, which straddle the two countries’ border.
