Warnings target island tourists

Multilingual warnings may be used in an effort to prevent foreign tourists becoming stranded on a notorious tidal causeway in Northumberland.

Multilingual warnings may be used in an effort to prevent foreign tourists becoming stranded on a notorious tidal causeway in Northumberland.

The move follows the latest rescue from the Holy Island crossing, which links the small community to the mainland.

A group of Spanish visitors had to abandon their rented vehicle and climb into a refuge hut after they were caught out by the tide on Tuesday.

Now Northumberland County Council is considering foreign language notices.

No-one was hurt in Tuesday’s incident, in which none of those rescued spoke English.

PHOTO MONTAGES

But Northumberland County Council said more measures would be considered to reduce the risks to visitors.

A spokesman said: “We have recently installed a turning area on the island side of the causeway to allow drivers to turn back when the causeway ahead is covered with water.

“We have also put up photo montages that show how dangerous it is to attempt to cross the causeway outside of safe crossing times.

“In the light if recent events we may have to consider the need for signs in other languages to be placed in the vicinity of the causeway.

“We continue to urge visitors to Holy Island to ensure they are aware of safe crossing times.”
