LOS ANGELES, California – Since 1958 the InterContinental Berlin in Germany has struck an impressive pose on the city’s skyline. This contemporary hotel is designed, built and run for optimal sustainability performance, and has recently been awarded the prestigious Green Globe certification.

“The Green Globe certification of the InterContinental Berlin is another step in our efforts to act in a responsible manner, while at the same time providing our customers with an environmentally friendly option to host their meetings and events,” said Robert P. Herr, General Manager at the InterContinental Berlin. “We understand that it is important to have an active role in protecting our environment, and tackle environmental and social challenges. It is our mission to create a truly sustainable business, and a better tomorrow for future generations. I am very proud about my highly ambitious team and our wonderful achievement with Green Globe.”

As part of IHG’s Green Engage™ program the InterContinental Berlin has implemented best practices at all operational levels. The innovative Environmental Management System not only measures the day-to-day energy, water and waste consumption, but also provides recommended actions – “green solutions” – to improve energy conservation and the property’s carbon footprint score.

At a local level, the InterContinental Berlin is immersed in a number of activities and foundations that give back to the community and environment. Projects, such as “Die Arche,” helping children and young people, affected by emotional or material poverty, are of great importance to the hotel. Clean-ups of the nearby Tiergarten Park are organized on a regular basis, and the hotel is a sponsor of the Berlin Zoo. In cooperation with Berlin schools, the hotel offers cooking classes and application training for students.

All charitable endeavors increase awareness and comply with the IHG approach to make a positive difference to the community. It is part of the business strategy to ensure that donations have the biggest possible impact to create more sustainable communities and better lives.

The IHG Green Engage™ program supports hotels in their effort to become “green” through reducing energy, water and waste consumption. Over 2,300 IHG hotels are enrolled in the program. IHG has worked with Green Globe to develop a streamlined certification process for IHG Green Engage™ hotels seeking third party recognition.
