ATCA announces 2008 Glen Gilbert Memorial Award Winner

ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 6, 2008) – Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) is pleased to announce the 2008 winner of the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 6, 2008) – Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) is pleased to announce the 2008 winner of the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award. John Crichton is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of NAV CANADA, the country’s civil air navigation services provider.

This pioneer in commercial aviation has an extremely diverse background. For many years he served as the executive vice president of First Air, after becoming a commercial pilot in 1969. He also served as chairman of the Board of NAV CANADA from August 1995 to October 1997 and was instrumental in bringing about the unique consensus among customers, unions and the federal government that created the world’s first privatized air navigation service (ANS). Under John’s leadership, The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has given NAV CANADA its highest award for ATC.

In addition to his role as Chair of NAV CANADA, he also served as president and CEO of the Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC) from April 1994 until November 1997. ATAC is the national trade association representing Canadian commercial aviation interests; its members account for 95 percent of the commercial aviation revenue generated in Canada.

In 2006, Mr. Crichton was selected as the Transportation Person of the Year for his “remarkable contributions to the air transportation industry over a long and successful career.” Presented by the Transportation Association of Canada, the award recognizes an industry leader who has contributed to the improvement or advancement of the transportation industry.

It has been the consistent dedication to the advancement of the industry that has earned John Crichton the prestigious Glen A. Gilbert Award which honors the lifelong achievements of an individual in the field of aviation. John and NAV CANADA have set a standard of low cost and high technology which are the mark of an efficient ATC system.
