The concept of andulela is to offer guests a unique access to the lives of real people of Cape Town and to showcase the cultural diversity that exists in this vibrant city.
Andulela was the first tour operator in Cape Town to offer guests the chance to enter the living rooms and businesses of ordinary and sometimes well-known South Africans for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the everyday lives of its people.
The tours use the universal themes of food and music to create a natural exchange, to ensure the experience is subtly educational and fun. These interactive tours often include a hands-on activity (such as cooking with locals), which further encourages natural exchange that reaches beyond cultural and socio-economic barriers. Visitors are introduced to real historical stories of the Rainbow Nation but without dwelling negatively on the legacy of the past, and rather putting a strong focus on current urban trends and the development of Cape Town that will leave visitors inspired. The real-life stories and experiences of its local people cannot be found in conventional guide books.
The word “andulela” means to be a “pioneer” or “to be the first.” The Andulela company began its community outreach/inclusive tourism in 2004, and was essentially the first company to offer themed interactive tours into the many inspiring, creative environments in Cape Town and the surrounding suburbs known as “townships.” The “Andulela Experience” became best known for its Cape Town Jazz Safari and Cape Malay Cooking Safari.
