On Sunday, the SKAL 74th World Congress was opened at the Amber Palace Theatre on the Carnival Glory cruise ship. This was the first time such an event was held on a cruise ship.

SKAL President Mok Singh from Los Angeles opened one of the largest SKAL events ever with 1,070 participants from 59 countries. He also introduced his Executive Committee, which included Karine Coulanges, Vice President of Communication and PR; Marianne Krohn, Vice President of Finance; Ann Lootens, Director of Young SKAL and the Florimond Volckaert Fund; Salih Cene, Director of Development; Keith Murcott, International SKAL Council President; Nigel Pilkington, Director of Business Affairs; and Bernhard Wegscheider, Secretary General.

The opening performance was by the Bhangra Dance Group of New York โ€“ a fantastic performance of this young Indian American group. In addition, Carnivalโ€™s President and CEO, Gerry Cahilll, addressed the SKAL members via a video feed.

Mok Singh reported about an initiative between SKAL and the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT) in opening peace parks and peace cities all over the world. The founder of IIPT, Louis D’Amore, was present at the opening event.

After the sustainable development tourism awards were presented, Mok Singh declared the SKAL Club in Colonia, Uruguay, as the SKAL Club of the Year. Darwin Australia was second and Ixtapa, Mexico, third.

The opening ceremony included the presentation of flags and international delegates from all over the world, starting with the United States of America as the country with the current presidency and also ending up with the USA as the host country.

SKAL is all about networking and fun โ€“ and the cruise is the perfect place for it. All delegates agreed they were having a wonderful time.
