HAWAII, NEW YORK, BRUSSELS, SEYCHELLES – “A serendipity moment” according to ICTP President Professor Geoffrey Lipman, chairing the landmark launch of GATE Global Impact’s (GGI) new investment platform during the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit. He was referring to the surprise arrival of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, Founder of revolutionary Grameen Bank, and his embrace of Maurice Strong, the Secretary General of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, which brought the room to its feet.
Mr. Yunus arrived as actress Maria Bello was explaining how the newly-created GATEwomen portal will aggregate women-focused and lead investor opportunities and match them to responsible capital. He gave an impromptu talk about the potential for getting micro-finance to people with bright ideas in the poorest communities. He said that for his projects – particularly those led by women – there was a 99% payback record.
Strong, the father of the modern day sustainable development movement, was supporting the launch of GATEtrip – the Tourism Responsible Investment Platform – as a way to bring Impact Investment to green growth-based, community-led projects.
The launch was highlighted with a moving presentation, showing how www.mawingu.org is delivering a direct impact in Kenya. GATE Impact Partners will seek to accelerate the closing of the digital divide via ImpactWifi, in order to increase connectivity to the African continent and support quality education, better healthcare, and the alleviation of poverty.
Finally Georg Kell, the Executive Director of UN Global Compact, announced a new partnership with GATE Global impact to support its “Action Hubs” – online meeting places for social entrepreneurs, corporations, impact investors, NGOs, and policy-makers to connect and engage in collaborative action. With the launch of the UN Action Hubs, the Global Compact is providing an unparalleled online platform to assist stakeholders to efficiently identify potential collaborators and engage with them. The partnership with Gate Global Impact’s GATEWAY platform moves awareness to action by integrating the ability to deploy capital with real time investment into a project of interest via GATEWAY.
All this graphically reinforced the presentations from bankers, fund managers, and government agencies on the power of the emerging Impact Investment marketplace. Vince Molinari, Founder of GGI, said, “A new investment and development paradigm will be unleashed as new regulation and, consumer and stakeholder demands, combine with financial technology and social media in order to accelerate the global deliverance of GOOD.”
