TANZANIA (eTN) – Tourists visiting Africa are set to view a big ring of fire made up by annular solar eclipse, that will dominate the wildlife parks and other tourist hotspots in southern highlands of Tanzania Thursday afternoon.

Southern zones of Tanzania and parts of Southern Africa will experience an annular solar eclipse – a rare astronomical event which had attracted sky enthusiasts and tourism institutions to market their products to “astronomical” holidaymakers.

Counted a rare event to happen in Tanzania, the annular solar eclipse is to be seen widely today, covering the southern and western parts of Tanzania with its shadow cutting across over the African sky, cutting across the Atlantic Ocean to Gabon, Congo, Mozambique then the Indian Ocean to Madagascar.

Banking on this event, the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) and the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) had launched marketing campaigns to attract world “astronomical” tourists to visit the wildlife parks in southern and western parts of Tanzania.

Several tourist companies in United Kingdom and the United States of America have been selling this Annular Solar Eclipse through their eight-day itineraries for Tanzania.

โ€œIt is a rare and unique event to happen in Tanzania as our Tourist Board is looking to attract more visitors to southern and western wildlife parks during the days of annularityโ€, TTB marketing director Mr. Phillip Chitaunga told eTN.

He said the Tourism Board has been marketing the parks and nature set-up in southern and western Tanzania zones for this rare event that will attract visitors and raise global attention to Tanzaniaโ€™s less tourist frequented wildlife parks.

Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), the custodian and the trustee institution for conservation of 16 wildlife parks, had embraced the astronomical event to expose its tourist parks before the sky-loving tourists.

Out of 16 national parks under TANAPA management, nine are located in Southern and Western parts of Tanzania, while the rest are in Northern and Coastal Zones.

Leading parks, where the annular solar eclipse could be viewed totally and partially, are Katavi, Ruaha, Kitulo, Mahale, Gombe, Udzungwa and Mikumi.

Solar eclipse tourists are set to view a big ring of fire in the sky for about four hours, from 10am to 2pm, when the sun will be blocked into darkness to form a ring made of brighter rays.
