Shark closes Waikiki Beach

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Waikiki lifeguards confirmed a shark sighting at 10:30 this morning, near Kuhio Beach, the most popular tourist beach in Waikiki. Signs were immediately posted, and the beach is effectively now closed.

Those who saw the shark said it looked to be a 10 to 12-footer and was following a turtle about 20 feet from the shoreline break.

Witnesses said the shark headed back out to sea, however, warning signs will remain posted until tomorrow when lifeguards will assess the beach on Tuesday morning.
