Kenya hosts UN Conference of Trade and Development

This week Kenya hosts Heads of State, 80 ministers and 6,000 delegates at the 14th edition of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD14) which is taking place in Nairobi until this Friday 22nd July. This is the second time Kenya has hosted the global conference which takes place every four years and Kenya is the only country to host the event twice.
UNCTAD is governed by 194 member states and is the UN body responsible for dealing with economic and sustainable development issues with specific focus to trade, finance and technology. The UN Secretary, Mr Ban Ki-moon officially opened the conference on Sunday 17th July accompanied by His Excellency Kenya’s President Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta among other dignitaries.

The Ministry of Tourism through the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) was key in securing Kenya as the host destination during a briefing session with delegates represented from each of the UN Member states held in March 2016.

This year’s UNCTAD14 theme is ‘From Decisions to Actions’ with the conference featuring ministerial debates, high-level round tables, thematic events, a World Investment Forum, a Global Commodities Forum, a Youth Forum and a Civil Society Forum, among other events with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development forming a key focus for the programme.

Kenya has played host to a range of international forums in recent years including The Global Entrepreneurship Summit, the 10th Ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation and the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development (TICAD) to be hosted next month. These events highlight Kenya’s capabilities in hosting international conferences and events in terms of the country’s conference facilities, hospitality offering, tourism products, infrastructure and accessibility.

Kenya Tourism Board’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Jacinta Nzioka-Mbithi, said ‘Kenya is proud to be hosting the UNCTAD14 for a second time and the delegates are here just in time to experience the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara, the 8th wonder of the world. We have expert local tour operators whom will be on hand to assist the delegates in organising tours to make the most of their time in Kenya’.
