Mövenpick Hotel Kuwait reaps benefits of sustainable product supply


KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait – Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has become the most Green Globe-certified hotel company in the world.

As part of a sustainable product supply program to become partially self-sufficient, Mövenpick Hotel Kuwait Free Trade Zone reaped the fruits of its second date harvest in July 2016. The hotel partnered with a company that specializes in agriculture, to design strategic solutions to successfully harvest and use dates in its own hotel restaurants and operations.

The dates are used in the hotel’s breakfast buffet, Chocolate Hour, to create “Go Healthy” liquid shots and as gifts to long-stay guests. They are also distributed to staff members. Long-stay guests were invited to attend the first date harvest.

“This new project is part of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts’ worldwide green initiatives program,” said Rushdi Al Ashkar, general manager, Mövenpick Hotel Kuwait. “It has been a thoroughly enriching experience to see our latest plan come to fruition. A key element of the plan is to involve our employees at a grassroots level to embed our commitment to the company’s sustainability approach. The first date harvest was entirely done by our own hotel employees, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and dedication to this cause.”

At 7,000 sqm and covering 60% of the property, the hotel’s surrounding green landscape is presently almost double its original size and contains a variety of local plants, indigenous to the region. A variety of eco-friendly products and environmentally sound methods are employed to maintain and irrigate the area, including sprinkler and dripping systems.

The 40 date palms that delivered the second harvest were planted around 13 years ago. Each palm provided roughly 10-15 kg of dates. To efficiently manage its energy and water resources, the elegant low-rise hotel already features LED lighting, dual flushing toilets and low-flow, high-pressure rain showerheads.
