ZHONGXING, China – Up to 40 people have been buried in a landslide Wednesday after days of torrential rains in the southwestern Chinese township of Zhongxing, reports states news agency Xinhua.
The landslide spanned some two square kilometers, ploughing into at least a dozen homes in this area in in the Sichuan Province.
A local official told the AFP that “so far we only know of 11 families that were buried and 200 other residents have been evacuated,” the BBC was reporting. There was no official word yet on deaths or injuries.
A bridge also collapsed in nearby Jiangyou due to the strong rain, causing at least six cars to plunge into the river. The local government said the river had reached a 50-year record level on Tuesday, reports the BBC
According to China’s Civil Affairs Ministry, the floods in Sichuan province have damaged 300 properties and forced thousands out of their homes.
