MOSCOW, Russia – According to Russian “Interfax” news agency, ex-CIA agent Edward Snowden asked for political asylum in Russia. Western news sources report that Snowden’s request was handed over to the Russian authorities by WikiLeaks advisor Sarah Harrison, who accompanies him on the trip.

It is also reported that the the Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet given an answer to the Snowden’s request.

Information that Snowden applied for the asylum in Russian Federation was confirmed by Kim Shevchenko – Russian Foreign Ministry’s consular officer on duty at Moscow “Sheremetyevo” airport.

“Yesterday at 22:30 the British citizen Sarah Harrison came to the Russian Foreign Ministry consular office at “Sheremetyevo” airport. She introduced herself as a lawyer and confidant of U.S. citizen Snowden. She conveyed the request to grant him political asylum in Russia,” – said Shevchenko.

But the press service of Russian Federal Migration Service denied the information.

“Information on Snowden applying for political asylum in Russia does not correspond to reality,” – said the representative office.

According to RIA “Novosti” Edward Snowden simultaneously applied for political in 15 countries, among which was Russia.

One Russian publication reperted that Russian President Putin has announced that Snowden is not a Russian agent and intelligence agencies of the Russian Federation never worked with him. Putin also declared that if Snowden stops “harming our American partners,” he can stay in Russia.

Earlier it was reported that on June 23, Snowden flew from Hong Kong to Moscow to follow in transit to Cuba, and then in some other country. It was also believed that he had applied for asylum in Ecuador.
