Samoa: Tourist center Matautu Wharf evacuated after tanker fire

Matautu Wharf is the gateway for cruise ships entering Samoa, and a busy area with tourists enjoying the many bars and restaurant present. Just recently, the Samoa prime minister told media, “The wharf is critical to the government’s drive to promote tourism.”

Today, this wharf and the surrounding area are being evacuated after a tanker caught fire. Authorities posted on twitter for people to please refrain from going to Matautu Wharf Area as still two tankers next to one that’s currently burning. Apparently there is a danger for the fire to spread.

So far the fire did not directly hit the whar, and there are no report of injuries or fatalities by anyone, but the order to evacuate is a precaution at this time.
