The latest data published by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) shows that in July 2024, the total number of non-US resident international visitors to the United States reached 6,899,661, marking a 6.8 percent increase compared to July 2023. This figure represents 89.6 percent of the total visitor volume recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2019.
The volume of overseas visitors to the United States was 3,424,737, reflecting a 2 percent rise from the previous year.
The highest number of international arrivals originated from Canada (1,978,222), Mexico (1,496,702), the United Kingdom (381,714), India (198,205), and Germany (191,164). Collectively, these five countries accounted for 61.5 percent of all international arrivals.
Among the top 20 countries generating tourists to the United States, Canada (-0.2 percent), France (-0.9 percent), and Switzerland (-2.9 percent) experienced declines in visitor numbers in July 2024 compared to July 2023.
In terms of business visa arrivals, the leading countries were the United Kingdom (36,229), India (35,109), Mexico (excluding land arrivals at 31,291), Japan (30,417), and Germany (21,125).
For tourism visa arrivals, the top five countries were the United Kingdom (342,788), Mexico (excluding land arrivals at 335,288), Germany (168,306), France (163,613), and Brazil (151,190).
Lastly, the leading countries for student visa arrivals included India (24,298), China (19,634), South Korea (5,817), Brazil (3,636), and Taiwan (2,761).
In July 2024, the total number of international departures by U.S. citizens reached 11,265,662, reflecting a 5.8 percent increase from July 2023 and representing 104.8 percent of the departures recorded in July 2019, prior to the pandemic.
For the year-to-date (YTD), North America, which includes Mexico and Canada, held a market share of 48.9 percent, while overseas destinations accounted for 51.1 percent.
Mexico emerged as the leading source of outbound visitors, with a total of 3,562,298 departures, constituting 31.6 percent of the total for July and 36.3 percent on a YTD basis. Canada experienced a year-over-year (YOY) growth of 7 percent.
When considering the combined YTD figures, Mexico (22,802,352) and the Caribbean (7,292,329) together represented 47.9 percent of all international departures by U.S. citizens.
Europe ranked as the second largest market for outbound U.S. travelers, with 2,620,171 departures, accounting for 23.3 percent of total departures in July. Notably, outbound travel to Europe in July 2024 saw a 13.1 percent increase compared to the same month in 2023.
