In 2012, 5.7 million international tourists discovered this South American destination, representing a 4.5 percent increase in a year.

Argentina remains the number one source of tourists, followed by North America and Germany. Chinese tourist numbers also gained momentum; in the space of a year the number of tourists visiting Brazil from China grew by a whopping 18 percent.

“Last year’s results highlight the fact that Dilma Rousseff’s government is working in the right direction in preparation for major international events and therefore gives a good image of our country abroad, thanks to our advertising campaigns, our public relations and other events,” commented Flavio Dino, Embratur’s president.

For 2013, the Brazilian tourism board expects to welcome over six million tourists.

Next year, Brazil is host country of the FIFA World Cup, and in 2016, the Summer Olympic Games.
