KOLKATA, India – The West Bengal Government plans to introduce a special police force for tourist destinations in the State soon. According to Krishnendu N. Choudhury, State Tourism Minister, the service would begin with seaside destination Digha and some places in Kolkata.

โ€œWe have to promote destinations from hills to seaside; mangroves to heritage sites to woo more tourists. We have taken up a few plans and introducing tourist police to ensure safety of the travellers is one of them,โ€ Choudhury said here on Friday.

He was addressing a seminar on tourism development in West Bengal organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Minister also underlined the need for developing proper road infrastructure connecting tourist destinations in the State with Kolkata. โ€œWe are concerned about the road infrastructure to tourist destinations in the State. Discussions with local people in a couple of (tourist) regions have been initiated to get land for developing proper roads,โ€ Choudhury said.

The State Government is also planning to publish different maps for religious, cultural and heritage tourism.
