Green Globe recertifies Thonet GmbH in Germany

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe announced recertification of Thonet GmbH in Cologne, Germany.

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe announced recertification of Thonet GmbH in Cologne, Germany. For years this pioneer of furniture design has demonstrated leadership and innovation in the fields of operational efficiency and social responsibility. Thonetโ€™s outstanding commitment to sustainability was recognized with the Green Globe Highest Achievement Award before.

โ€œWe are very proud about our good result with the recertification through Green Globe,โ€ said Mirko Nordheim, Head of Quality Management at Thonet GmbH. โ€œAs a result, it can be documented that Thonet achieved significant improvements in the area of sustainability. The combined efforts of the entire team are once again acknowledged through a very high score of points in the certification process. We are particularly happy to note a dramatic reduction of our three primary natural resources: gas reduced by 81%, water reduced 70% and electricity could be reduced by 94% – compared to 2010.โ€

A long-term Sustainability Management System is implemented at Thonet GmbH, and operational performance is strictly monitored. Thonetโ€™s environmental policies and practices have been integrated into all aspects of the business operations: eco-friendly, local and recycle materials are preferred, resources are used in the most effective way, wood needs to be PSC or PFSC certified, waste wood is being used for heating procedures, UV hydro lacquers are standard, and transportation is always optimized. Awareness and application of eco-friendly practices is promoted among staff, partners, and suppliers, in line with the companyโ€™s philosophy to create a better future.

Thonet GmbH supports Atmosfair, a climate protection organization with a focus on travel. Atmosfair actively protects the environment by compensating greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energies. Thonetโ€™s contribution so far was saving 30,600 kilo of CO2-eq greenhouse gas emissions.

Green Globe Certificationโ€™s CEO, Guido Bauer, commented: โ€œWe are extremely pleased to award re-certification to Thonet GmbH in Germany. I am impressed with Thonetโ€™s environmental efforts and their dedication to use โ€˜Pure Materialsโ€™, which guarantee a careful handling of nature. Solid wood parts are untreated and only oiled, striking scarred leather is tanned in an environmentally-friendly way and especially durable. Tubular steel base frames are nickel-plated rather than steel-plated, and over the course of time a natural patina develops the surface. Thonet products are unmistakably unique and with their approach they certainly set the standard in sustainable furniture design.โ€

ABOUT THONET GMBH

Thonet today, as in the past, is considered a pioneer of furniture design throughout the world. The company was established in 1819 by Michael Thonet to produce his own designs, using the then new brentwood process, which he developed. Within a short period of time it became a major furniture manufacturer with a global distribution network. In the 1930s a major expansion took place with the addition of tubular steel furniture from famous Bauhaus associated designers, such as Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, and Mies van der Rohe. Today, as well as continuing with the manufacture of many of the tubular steel and bentwood classics, Thonet, in their long established tradition of innovation and design quality, introduced products by renowned contemporary architects and designers such as Claudio Bellini, Stefan Diez, Naoto Fukasawa, Hadi Teherani, James Irvine, Glen Oliver Lรถw, Lepper, Schmidt, Sommerlade. This family enterprise managed by the 5th generation of Thonets, has its corporate headquarters and production facility in Frankenberg, Germany.
