Green Globe certifies Sugar Ridge Resorts in Antigua

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe announced certification of the Sugar Ridge Resort in St. Mary’s, Antigua, in the West Indies.

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe announced certification of the Sugar Ridge Resort in St. Mary’s, Antigua, in the West Indies. Since its opening in December 2009 this luxury boutique hotel has demonstrated a firm commitment to meet the highest international standards in regards to the environment, conservation, and corporate social responsibility. Sugar Ridge Resort’s green initiatives did outstanding work, promoting awareness and sustainable practices on all levels.

“We are very proud to earn the prestigious Green Globe certification and international recognition,” said Keith Martel, General Manager at the Sugar Ridge Resort, “Ethical and environmentally-friendly practices are integrated into the core values of our resort, recognizing that this will sustain our business for the present and the future. As part of our Green Initiative we developed signature activities that take place in and around the community, such as beach clean-ups, volunteering at non-profit organizations, providing internships for students from our Hospitality Training School, and conduction educational talks at local schools. The first such activity took place on Sunday, June 26, 2011, when members of the hotel’s Green Team joined the staff of the hotel’s Aveda Concept Spa in celebrating Earth Month. One of the activities of the day was a Volunteer Beach Clean at Pelican Isles in Crab Hill. This endeavor was supported by members of the Hospitality Training Institute and the Purple Dragon Karate School.”

A long-term Sustainability Management System is in effect at the Sugar Ridge Hotel, and the resort is actively involved in conserving resources, reducing pollution, conserving biodiversity, ecosystems, and landscapes. In conjunction with the Antigua and Barbuda National Solid Waste Authority, the Sugar Ridge Resort is working on a nationwide successful recycling system helping to ensure that recycling on the island becomes part of the social order. The resort implemented a comprehensive reuse and recycle program, and in 2012 a total of 325 pounds of aluminum cans; 1,572 pounds of steel cans; 1,390 pounds of mixed plastics; and 152 pounds of PET plastics was collected. Packaging is reduced to a minimum, and local suppliers adhering to sustainable practices are given preference. Guests are encouraged to sharpen their sense of environmental responsibility and minimize their carbon footprint.

Green Globe Certification’s CEO, Guido Bauer, commented: “We are extremely pleased to award certification to the Sugar Ridge Hotel in Antigua. This property really impresses with their dedication to environmental preservation and quickly became the corporate leader in the sustainability development movement in the community. ‘We did not inherit the Earth from our parents, we are borrowing it from our children’ is the motto here. The broad objective is to pursue sustainable tourism through conservation and managed use of its natural heritage, improvement, and optimal use of human resources, to ensure a product of the highest quality, improving the life and economic development of the people of Antigua.”
