Zhu Jia Jiao is an ancient riverside town west of Shanghai. It’s market traditions date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. That alone has made it a favourite tourist destination. Now a local artist has captured the town in a papercut.
The ancient town of Zhu Jia Jiao has earned increasing recognition in recent years for its delicate riverside scenery. The papercut provides a panoramic view of the town. The work measures 1.3 meters long and 80 centimeters wide. There are bridges and temples. And there is the market street, which has maintained the same appearance for nearly 300 years. And in the marketplace are vivid characters depicted.
The papercut is from the hand of Chen Nanjun, known as the most distinguished artist of the Southern School of Chinese papercut. Other than this, his magnum opus, Chen has done paper cuts of many tourist sites around Zhu Jia Jiao. His art pieces also include flowers, birds, and the Chinese zodiac. Chen says the panorama of Zhu Jia Jiao expresses his love for the beautiful riverside town.
Chen Nanjun, Papercut artist said “I’ll keep making improvements and will cut an even more beautiful landscape picture of Zhu Jia Jiao.”
Chen Nanjun and his son have just set up a papercut workshop. They will make their effort in the cause of passing down and developing Chinese papercut art.
