ROME — Authorities say food poisoning has sickened 30 British tourists vacationing at a hotel on Italy’s Lake Garda.

One has died, but the British consulate in Milan says an autopsy is needed to determine the cause.

The consulate says 30 British nationals at the Grand Hotel Gardone fell ill on the weekend.

Sixteen of them were taken to hospital.

The hotel’s owner, Franco Mizzaro, said Wednesday that contamination with salmonella bacteria is suspected, including in the death.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.

Mizzaro says the hotel’s restaurant has been closed as a precaution.
