DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A woman tourist insulted a female police officer and assaulted her with a water bottle while being detained at Dubai airport, the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours has heard.

Ukrainian ES, aged 40, arrived at Dubai from Sri Lanka on a visit visa at about 3am on July 17 and went to the iris scan desk. Court records state that a dispute began between her and an airport employee.

“She started screaming and singing at the same time,” said Emirati AY, 35, who suspected ES was drunk and referred her to his superior’s office. As she left, AY said she swore at him.

At that point police were called and ES was taken to the airport police office.

When female police officer, AR, 30, was escorting ES, the tourist started screaming loudly at her, shoved her and threw a bottle of water at her.

However, ES told prosecutors that while she was waiting for her iris scan she became bored and started to sing.

“An employee asked me why was I singing and then took me to the immigration office,” she said, adding that shortly after, two men and a woman took her to a different office where she claimed she was beaten.

“They pulled my hair, kicked me in the abdomen and all over my body and slapped me on the face,” said ES.

ES denied assaulting and insulting the policewoman, saying that she only sprayed her with water. She confessed to drinking alcohol, but outside of the UAE.

The next hearing will be on January 8.
