The Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project funded by the European Union under the SWITCH-Asia Program held its first ever “SWITCH-Asia Green Hotels Award 2012” competition on November 12, 2012 at Cinnamon Grand Colombo with the participation of distinguished guests from the industry. The award ceremony was held on conjunction with the prestigious “Best Corporate Citizen Award” ceremony of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce who is also the implementing arm of the project.
The competition was open to hotels registered with the project and the applicants were evaluated under the categories of Large and Boutique Hotels and the Small and Medium Scale Hotels. The awards are aimed at recognizing and rewarding the hotels that have achieved enhanced environmental performance through implementation of energy, water and waste management measures to incentivize more hotels to join the project and encourage implementation of such practices in the tourist hotel industry in Sri Lanka.
There were awards for the overall Best Green hotel (both large and SME categories), Water Conservation, Energy Conservation, and Waste Management Champions (both large and SME categories).
