The UK’s tourism industry has had a boost after four UK cities made it onto a list of Europe’s top 10 fastest-growing tourist destinations.

Glasgow (in 6th place), Manchester (7th), Belfast (8th) and Liverpool (10th) all made it on to the list compiled today by travel website TripAdvisor.

The top ten was based on reviews and opinions posted on the website from travelers across the world.

Topping the European list was Kiev in Ukraine, followed by Moscow, Turin and the Russian city of St Petersburg.

Glasgow, which is due to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, came fourth. The city’s place on the list was hailed today by Glasgow City Council leader Councillor Gordon Matheson who said: ‘This demonstrates a real vote of confidence in Glasgow.’

Glasgow recently benefited from a multi-million pound riverside development which saw shipyards and steelworks replaced by art galleries and concert halls.

Manchester, which came fourth, is the home to the Old Trafford football stadium and has just launched the National Football Museum.

Meanwhile, Titanic Belfast put its home city, which came 7th in the list, firmly back on the tourist map when it opened in March.

The futuristic tourist attraction, which cost £100 million and resembles the doomed ships’ four hulls, is located near the docks where the ocean-liner was built.

TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw said: ‘All winners should be incredibly proud of their award.

‘Not only has traveller interest in their destination increased, but each city has also seen a significant rise in positive feedback on their hotels, restaurants and things to do.

‘For those unsure about where to travel next year, this list may offer welcome inspiration.

‘With the hangover of the ‘Jubilympics’ set to hit in 2013, it’s great to see four UK destinations recognised in what may mean a great boost to the UK’s tourism industry.’

In the worldwide list of cities, Mar del Plata in Argentina was first, followed by Sao Paulo in Brazil, and Kiev.
