Thirty-one Brazilian and foreign tourists visiting a tropical island off Brazil’s northeast coast were robbed at gunpoint over the weekend by three men.
The gang sequestered the group for 20 minutes in the restaurant where they were having lunch on the island of Itaparica, off shore from the city of Salvador de Bahia, a spokeswoman for the local tourist police said.
Most of the tourists were Brazilians, she said, adding that no-one was hurt in the robbery, which occurred Saturday.
The gang fled with cash, mobile telephones, cameras and jewelry.
The group’s guide, Ciro Leal, told the Folha news agency the foreigners included two Americans, two Argentines, two Belgians, a Briton and two Germans.
“Incidents like this give a very bad image to tourism in Bahia,” Leal said.
